Runway Safety Gets Smarter



In the ever-evolving landscape of air travel, safety remains paramount. Honeywell's innovative Surface Alert (SURF-A) system is poised to revolutionize runway safety by providing real-time alerts to pilots, reducing the risk of runway incidents and enhancing overall aviation safety.

SURF-A is a cutting-edge software system developed by Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, designed to detect potential runway hazards and alert pilots during critical phases of flight, such as takeoff and landing. Leveraging Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data, the system monitors aircraft positions and identifies potential conflicts on or near runways. Upon detecting a potential hazard, SURF-A provides both visual and audible alerts to pilots, enabling them to take timely corrective actions.

Runway incursions, situations where an aircraft, vehicle, or person is on a runway without authorization, pose significant risks to aviation safety. According to industry estimates, a runway incursion occurs somewhere in the world every day. They can lead to catastrophic accidents if not promptly addressed. Factors contributing to runway incursions include increased air traffic, complex airport layouts, and human error. As airports become more congested and flight operations intensify, the need for advanced safety systems like SURF-A becomes increasingly critical.

The system offers two audible alerts when another aircraft crosses its path during takeoff or landing.
